Golf cart rules in Canton, Georgia

In Canton, personal transportation vehicles (PTVs, golf carts that can’t go faster than 20 mph) can be driven only inside a PTV district the city council has approved, on streets with a speed limit of 25 mph or less. PTVs are registered with the city every year ($15).

What we haven’t checked. This page rests on the city’s PTV page. We haven’t read the PTV ordinance (Chapter 58, Article V) or the district flyers and maps, and the page’s street list for Franklin Park is hard to read.

Do you need a driver’s license to drive a golf cart (PTV) in Canton?

The city’s page says the driver must hold a valid permit. Under Georgia law, a PTV driver needs a valid driver’s license unless the local ordinance let unlicensed drivers ride before 2012. We haven’t read Canton’s ordinance, so check with the city.

How old do you have to be to drive a golf cart in Canton?

Driver ages aren’t on the city’s page. Check with the city.

Does a golf cart need a permit or registration in Canton?

Yes. PTVs are registered every year (January 1 to December 31) for $15, with a signed affidavit. Riding without a decal can bring a fine. The city’s page also lists the equipment a PTV needs.

Where can golf carts go in Canton?

Only inside an approved PTV district, and only on streets with a speed limit of 25 mph or less. Not on sidewalks or trails unless they were built for carts. Obey the traffic laws.

The city council approves districts when a homeowners’ association, or five or more property owners, petition for one. The city’s page lists the approved districts: River Green, Franklin Park and Towne Mill. Some streets in River Green and Towne Mill are excluded, and the page lists them.

Golf cart or LSV: what’s the difference in Canton?

Canton’s PTV rules cover golf carts that can’t go faster than 20 mph.

A low-speed vehicle (LSV) is a separate class under Georgia law: four wheels, a top speed over 20 mph and up to 25, built or converted to the federal LSV standard. LSVs are registered and insured like other vehicles and can use roads posted 35 mph or less. An LSV can’t travel along roads posted over 35; lawful crossings are separately regulated.

Can you drive a golf cart at night in Canton? Hours and lights

The city’s page doesn’t set hours.

Follow the law and posted signs. Follow applicable law, posted restrictions and lawful directions from officers. If permission is unclear, don’t use that road or path until confirmed. Rules can change after we check them.

Using SlowGo here

SlowGo routes on roads posted 35 mph or under by default; it doesn’t establish cart access here.

Check local rules before you ride. It doesn’t know Canton’s PTV districts yet, so a route can leave a district or use a street carts can’t. Stay inside an approved district.
