Fort Walton Beach has two golf cart zones: carts may drive only on city streets inside them, and only on streets posted 30 mph or less. Carts need a $25 yearly city decal, and drivers need a driver’s license.
What we haven’t checked. This page rests on the city’s Alternative Transportation page and zone map. We haven’t read the city code section behind them (sec. 11.13.07) or any later change to it.
State law: see golf cart laws in Florida.
See the City of Fort Walton Beach’s golf cart zone map.
Do you need a driver’s license to drive a golf cart in Fort Walton Beach?
Yes. Drivers need a valid driver’s license, in their possession.
How old do you have to be to drive a golf cart in Fort Walton Beach?
The city ties driving to the license rather than to an age: the driver needs a valid driver’s license.
Does a golf cart need a permit or registration in Fort Walton Beach?
Yes. A city permit decal costs $25 a year, either for daytime only or for day and night. Carts need PIP and property damage liability insurance.
Where can golf carts go in Fort Walton Beach?
Only on city streets inside one of the city’s two golf cart zones, and only on streets posted 30 mph or less:
- the north zone (Kenwood)
- the south zone (Elliott Point, Ferry Park and the Downtown Entertainment District)
Golf carts can’t drive on or cross state roads: US 98, Eglin Parkway, Beal Parkway, Florida Place SE and Perry Avenue SE.
Golf cart or LSV: what’s the difference in Fort Walton Beach?
Low-speed vehicles can use city streets posted 35 mph or less, but not state roads except to cross at traffic signals. They need the same $25 city decal. An LSV can’t travel along roads posted over 35; lawful crossings are separately regulated.
Can you drive a golf cart at night in Fort Walton Beach? Hours and lights
The decal is either daytime only or day and night. Florida law requires headlights, brake lights, turn signals and a windshield for night driving.
Follow the law and posted signs. Follow applicable law, posted restrictions and lawful directions from officers. If permission is unclear, don’t use that road or path until confirmed. Rules can change after we check them.
Using SlowGo here
SlowGo routes on roads posted 35 mph or under by default; it doesn’t establish cart access here.
Check local rules before you ride. It doesn’t know Fort Walton Beach’s two zones or its 30 mph line yet, so a route can leave a zone or use a 35 mph street. Check the zone map before you ride.
